I Appreciate You

  • Nov 14 2014

Thank You Card Front Thank You Card Inside

I recently received a hand-written thank you card in the mail from a customer. A customer was thanking ME for her order. As usual, I was once again overwhelmed with the appreciation I have been offered for my handmade jewelry and hair accessories. Not only is it wonderful and amazing that people from all over the globe have deemed the pieces from my artisan-made collection lovely enough to buy and wear (which is in itself beyond fulfilling), but many of these people have gone one or two steps farther than I could have ever guessed anyone would: they are sending me messages of gratefulness, and recommending my company to their friends and family.

I cannot express my gratitude enough. Simply put: I would not be able to continue producing the work I love (designing and creating the original jewelry and hair accessories found on this website) without each and every one of my customers. It is solely due to them that these pieces are even able to exist in the world.

(I know that sounds heavy, but it is 100% true.)

I want to host a little promotion to express some of that gratitude. So now through midnight on Sunday, for every 25 dollar purchase in jewelry and hair accessories made from this site, a 25 dollar reward coupon will be included with your order. For every 50 dollar purchase, a 50 dollar reward coupon will be included, and with every 100 dollar purchase, a 100 dollar reward coupon will be included with you order.

Customer Appreciation Event

The reward coupons won't expire until the end of January, so if you don't want to use them to buy yourself something, you can pass your reward off as a gift to a loved one, or slip it in a Christmas card to give a loved one a nice surprise this holiday season.

In case I haven't stressed this enough...

THANK YOU.

This is all happening because of you.

The Rebecca Collection Goes Blue for Winter

  • Nov 12 2014

winter jewelry collection

The jewelery designs from the original, fall-inspired Rebecca Collection were just too wearable and stylish to last for only one season. So, naturally, I had to create a version that could lead it wearers on into winter and beyond. The perfect color? Blue. And not just any 'ol blue either. These pieces sparkle with the striking combination of glistening, dark cobalt blue and matte, smoky gray-blue with silver toned metal chain and accents.

Blue Statement Jewelry

Like the maroon and sand colored version of the collection before it, this winter version contains modern, easy-to wear necklaces, stack-able bracelets and rings, and face-framing earrings. All of the pieces easily converge from casual daily wear to elegant evening attire, this winter version especially, with its striking combination of deep, mysterious blue and sparkling silver metal tones.

Christmas Lists Made Easy

  • Nov 7 2014

Perhaps you still need to clean up the cobwebs and caution tape from your front door before you can even begin thinking about the upcoming holiday shopping season. I feel you. It's not even Thanksgiving yet for goodness sake!

BUT--and hear me out on this--you will thank yourself later if you get some of your gift-giving planning done now rather than at the last minute. (And this advice is coming from Ms. Unorganized herself, so you know I mean it.)

One of the easiest things you can do to prep yourself before you start thinking about shopping is creating a list of people to shop for.

Easy enough, right?

To make this process even easier of you, here is a free printable holiday list-maker for you to download and use for your planning process:

Holiday Shopping List Free Download

I personally find that keeping track of what I've gotten for each person on my list throughout the shopping process makes it a million times easier to avoid buying way too much for one person (my husband, for example, is notoriously easy to shop for - anything Star Wars or Lego related makes him happy!) Or on the other side of things, it will remind you to persistently look for something for that one person who you usually have to scramble and find something for at the last second before the holiday party where you have to face him or her, preferably not empty-handed.

It always helps to have a little something to make the sound of Christmas music in the department stores a little less stressful, and a little more like something you have a firm handle on.

If you've found this list to be helpful, please share it with your peeps and help them get a leg-up too. These are supposed to be joyous times after all, not the season for stressing and panic (allegedly). Anything that keeps us from divulging in too much eggnog and peppermint schnapps is, I think, a good thing.

Arrow Earrings Reviewed by Amie Scott

  • Oct 28 2014

Amie Scott of the fashion blog Dimplebug recently flaunted and reviewed a pair of arrow earrings from Megan's Beaded Designs. She loved them, of course, but you don't have to take our word for it. Here is an excerpt from the featured blog post:

"The arrow earrings are really cool too! I pop them in whenever I have my hair up and I instantly feel fiercer – if that’s a word. A bit like Katniss from The Hunger Games. Don’t mess with me (hehe)!"

Want your own pair of arrow earrings? You can buy them here for just five bucks.

How to Wear A Hair Clip that Will Stay in All Day Long

  • Oct 20 2014

The beaded hair clips from Megan's Beaded Designs can be heavier than, say, an all-fabric or ribbon clip because glass tends to weigh more than tulle. This can cause a dilemma. How does one get the hair clip to stay put? Especially when you are planning on a more active day, perhaps even some dancing, keeping the clip still can be a problem.

But it doesn't have to be. Watch the short video below to learn a simple trick to keep that hair clip in place, no matter what you've got on your schedule:

Hope this tip helps! Also, if you are interested in the hair clip featured in this video, I have it available for purchase here, and you can shop all beaded hair clips from Megan's Beaded Designs here.

Daily Ways to Dress in Costume

  • Oct 8 2014

It's full-on October and Halloween is soon to arrive at everyone's doorsteps in the form of young trick-or-treaters and party event invitations on Facebook for those of us past the stage to accept free candy from strangers but still not "old" enough to stop celebrating what truly is the most awesome holiday of the year. Even the most "mature" of us adults are contemplating playing dress up, grateful for the excuse.

Not sure what you want to dress up as this year? The great news is that you don't have to wait until October 31st to try on your favorite characters or roles, because you can do it all month long in more subtle, but effective ways. Deciding who you want to be for a day, can be as simple as adding a few accessories and wearing an unusual shade of lipstick. Those who notice will enjoy your sense of festivity, and those who don't will simply wonder why you're looking extra radiant, without being able to tell that it's because you're channeling a super hero or fairy princess, they'll just notice how fantastic you look. Here are a few outfit board to inspire you...

Book Review: Be Absorbed by Tana French

  • Sep 30 2014

I love an author that can grab me by the wrists and shove me head-first into a world of an intense story and lead me to falling in love with characters who are so real I can't believe they come from a work of fiction.

Tana French does all this and more.

Reeling from my last Gillian Flynn novel, and scrabbling to find something as equally gripping, I decided to pick up the first novel in Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad series, In the Woods. And there was no looking back once I did.

The 5 novels within the series (ending with The Secret Place) are each surprising and griping with the intricacies of their character development and their thrilling twists of plot. Most of all, they contain a level of emotional intelligence, giving glimpse into the keen observation skills Tana must certainly possess.

Also surprising was the realistic and gritty portrayal of Ireland in these novels. After visiting the country myself this past summer, I can see how easy it would be to make the place out to be a scene of nothing but magical, glossy fairy tales with purely happy endings. But Tana doesn't shy away from the dark places, and rough edges of Dublin and its surrounding small Irish towns. Yet, while being dark enough to reach the point of including child murder and touching on what it's like to deal with psychopaths and their manipulative abilities, she also includes the heartwarming touches of friendship, love, and family bonds in a way that really expresses their true power in combating the darkness that can surround them.

So if you are looking for your next can't-put-it-down read, start with In The Woods. Seriously. You can thank me later.

Camera-friendly jewelry that will flatter you in photographs.

Whether its the new badge for your latest job or the new student ID for the upcoming school year, September can be a high-pressure month for capturing your likeness. Between deciding what clothes to throw on and how to fix your hair, you have one other important decision: what jewelry should you wear? I may not be good at a lot of other things (like running marathons or preparing Parmesan chicken), but I know jewelry. This is something I can help you out with.

For starters, you're going to want to wear jewelry pieces that will actually show up in the photographs. As lovely as delicate and dainty slivers of chain or tiny rhinestone ear stud sparkles can be, they're often invisible in wallet/bio size shots. In this case, bigger is truly better--at least to a reasonable, and noticeable point.

That point being: you want jewelry pieces that will flatter and suit your face and the neckline of your top. Massive statement earrings are awesome on the runway, but can make your head appear shrunken in a 4 by 6. Better to choose a length that frames your face and coordinates with your hair style (the longer the hair the longer and larger are the earrings you can get away with, if you have it let down, that is.) Likewise, you'll want the level of "statement" your necklace makes to contrast that of your blouse or dress top. A Loud-with-a-capital-"L" shirt calls for a more subtle, complimentary necklace in simple mod design, white a simple white T or plain beige shell looks awesome with a bold, chunky neck party with lots of layers and bright, shimmering color.

What to Wear on Picture Day

Finally, pay attention to the length of you necklace and where it rests in position to your top. You either want it to be shorter and rest above the seam of your blouse, whether it can prettily show off your skin tone and neckline, or lengthy and well past the point of where it crosses your collar. When pieces rest right on the seam of your collar it's a weird fit and looks awkward, particularly if it makes the necklace's pendant protrude at an unintentional angle.

Finally, when considering shades, note that darker generally shows up on photographs better than shades of white, however, if you want to show off that fab tan you worked on all summer, some brighter shades may present a stronger contrast.

You don't have to stress over matching your earrings to your necklace and to your bracelet. However, you do want to keep metallic tones (silver, gold, gunmetal) the same, unless all of the pieces purposely intermix. The same is often true of color families, though of course, there are always exceptions to the rule.

The most important thing you can wear on picture day? Your smile. Keep it genuine and express your inner positive energy with those teeth - it will be noticed and remembered most of all.
